St. Francis Club Regatta: Zamazaan crosses finish line first!
by Gary

Saturday April 29th -- A day of reconnecting for the commander and crew of Zamazaan. After a long winter hiatus from the racing circuit while under refitting and repair; Zamazaan emerged from the pack as a serious contender for the 2006 racing season. Under the guidance of Captain Charles Weghorn and with his unwavering steady hand, Zamazaan executed a brilliant strategic start designed to intimidate and throw the competition off balance. This was followed by a series of well planed-out tactical maneuvers across the bay through treacherous currents, around dangerous obstacles, and finally up the city front to perform a series of rapid, technically flawless tacks to emerge as the undisputed leader of the pack. In honor of this achievement, the St Francis Yacht Club race committee has bestowed upon Zamazaan the traditional “firing of the gun” as she crossed the finish line, letting all know; Watch out, Zamazaan is back!

Zamazaan decided to race without spinnaker. This made for a good contest with Aleta (Peterson 46), who used the kite on the second and third leg. The photos show Aleta taking the spin down after passing Alcatraz and on the last waterfront leg with plenty of tacks.

Zamazaan Rocks Vallejo Race
by Gary

Saturday May 6th – Vallejo Yacht Clubs 106th running of the Vallejo Race kicked off yet another season of racing on the Bay for 2006, and Zamazaan was there! Zamazaan, who recently took first in the StFYC regatta race, was the boat to watch this year from the moment she started. Observers noted that Zamazaan relentlessly responded to changing wind conditions and course changes as if she were a J24! Starting with a #3 Jib Zamazaan’s crew rigged for a #2 jib peel on the upwind leg, but changed mid-rigging to a 1.5 fractional kite at the weather mark for a blast reach and then peel to .75 Masthead Kite, A.K.A, "The Whomper". She then peeled again to a 0.5 Masthead Kite, A.K.A. "Whomper Junior", and then back to the Whomper. Jibing over 20 times, hoisting the #2 jib and finally dousing the Whomper in the harbor; Zamazaan rocked the fleet with #1 in class to finish, #1 in class on corrected time and #1 Best Dock Party!
Of special note, the Zamazaan victory lap through the Golden Gate on the return trip home produced a recording breaking speed of over 10 knots.

Zamazaan Scores First in Northern Star!
by Gary

Saturday May 20 - For the third time in a row, the captain and crew of Zamazaan have sailed her to victory!  Let it be known that Zamazaan has won the prestigious Northern Star race

Spinnaker Cup Report
by Jerry

Zamazaan showed her true prowess as we flew down the coast on Friday having made a good exit out of the Golden Gate, despite some fun with a head sail change in some difficult conditions. The long run down to Monterey involved quite a few gibes and we arrived in Monterey late Friday evening after a trying time getting to the finishing line as the wind decided to fade away! All in all we had a great race and many contributions from the whole team helped us to finish in style!
Those of us who stayed in Monterey had a great Saturday exploring the aquarium and sampling the delights of Cannery Row and the downtown area.
The trip back on Sunday proved to be a little more eventful than expected since the anticipated cruise back up to SF started with a building wind (up to 25-30 knots apparent) as we crossed Monterey Bay. We then had some engine problems that slowed us a little and led us to have to beat up under sail past Santa Cruz and Pigeon Point. We weren't able to fix the engine out on the water so as the sun gave us a spectacular show setting into the Pacific we sailed into Half Moon Bay harbor and docked successfully after some neat helming by Evan!

Delta Ditch
by Gary
We needed to shave ~27 min off our time to have taken first.Janice said she packed 6 spinnakers and she knew of two she didn't pack.  She thinks we did 20 sail changes over 7 hours, or about 3 / hour! All in all, we did an excellent job racing Saturday and finishing in the center of the pack is not so bad. By all accounts it was a blast!!

Standings after Encinal Race
7/29/06

The results of last week’s race are in, and Biz has kindly recapped our performance thus far this year:
We finished second to Aleta on corrected time by just 4 minutes and 3 seconds in the Encinal race even though we got the gun.  Good comeback but we can improve and take first as well. We have gotten the gun in Northern Star and finished second to Pegasus XIV, gotten the gun for Vallejo and finished first; finished 2nd to Isis (SC 52) overall in the Delta Ditch and finished 6th on corrected time.  Aleta was 8th on corrected time in D. Ditch. In the Monterey race we finished 18th of 28th in our division but we beat Cipango on corrected time. Also Cipango did not finish Northern Star, and in the Vallejo race they only beat us by 40 seconds on corrected time so we are certainly competitive...3 guns out of 5 races!
For the OYRA standings Aleta leads with 8 points, Samiko has 10 and we are in 3rd with 11 pts. That is because Aleta and Samiko raced the Sunday race back from Vallejo and Aleta got a 2nd and Samiko a 3rd while we got a 6th as we did not race.  We are in the hunt for the overall season trophy and with a couple of good races we can move into first place.

Half Moon Bay Race
8/12/06 by Biz
Well done for a great race.  We got the gun and also and importantly finished first on corrected time.  Our corrected time using the dreaded time on time formula i.e. 650/ (550 plus handicap) or in Z's case 650/550 + 21 or 650 divided by 571 times the elapsed time of 5hours, 21 minutes and 39 seconds gave us a corrected time of  6 hours, 6 minutes and 9 seconds! Hope you all followed that math.  Petard, a Farr 36 was second with a corrected time of 6:18:54 and X-Dream was 3rd with a corrected time of 6:40:14.  Their handicaps are 93 and 60 respectively so we gave them a lot of time and still won by a margin of 12 minutes. This was our best race of the year so let’s keep up the momentum.  For Zamazaan, this was a one race event so it does not count in the War Horse overall yearly standings where we remain in 3rd place but with a good chance to take season's honors by continuing to sail well.  Cheers and a quick recovery for Evan who is recovering from arm surgery but gave us plenty of moral support at the dock and at dinner in Half Moon Bay!

Victory at Windjammer
9/2/06
Zamazaan finished first in division 3 and 4-th overall after a gutsy race close to shore. Aleta decided to catch a breeze further out on the ocean but got caugth by low winds after midnight. Infra Red finished third in our division.

The three yachts and their skippers: Chuck Weghorn (Zamazaan), Ray Lopez (Infra Red), and Keith Brown (Aleta)

Gary receives the award and Jerry with the plaque.

Showdown at Shark Island
9/30/06
With a clear win in the Farallones 2006 race, Zamazaan came one step closer to first place in in the OYRA War Horse division for the entire year 2006. This very light wind, yet heavily contested race went over 58 nm and 18 hours. From the starting line off the Golden Gate Yacht Club Race Deck, yachts had to sail via any route to and around the Southwest Farallone island either port or starboard and return. Zamazaan pulled away from the fleet on the way out using isolated patches of wind and tireless tacking. When trying to round the Farallones, we caught a nasty header and had the hardest of times to get around that desolated rock. Meanwhile one of the competitors coming on a more southern course got nicely lifted and passed us on the way to the western tip sailing extremely close to the island. Flashlight recon revealed a yellow hull and thus it was concluded that Aleta had arrived for the showdown. The race was decided when they got caught in a hole without any wind. At times it looked as if they were drifting against the rocks. The return trip was all tireless trimming, twisting, adjusting, tweaking and steering, as Cesca put it. We arrived back at the club too late for dinner and too early for breakfast and resisted the temptation to turn on the speakers for a dock party.

Comments after the race:

“At last Zamazaan has a crew that knows how to sail the old lady. Do you know that you sailed into the 50's and 52's and wound  up second overall. We have had a great season and you all should be proud of what you have accomplished. I've never sailed with a better or happier crew. Thank You for a grand year!” --- Chuck Weghorn

“ I think you showed some real class staying in until the bitter end. My congratulations to everyone. Zammi what a job talk about sailing to your rating both PHRF and IR” --- Gary Gebhard

” I second the congrats to Chuck - you did a fantastic job on the run home. Guess I need to invest in a 1/2 oz or .3 poly now!” --- Dexter Bailey

“ What a day (and night) of racing!  Congratulations to Zam for truly kicking our collective butts!  Chuck, you outsmarted us and did some pretty damn fast sailing. I think the most amazing thing was after the first 8 hours of racing, we were all within a half mile of one another out at the Island!  And three of us finished in a 20 minute time frame. Pretty good racing, if you ask me.” -- Keith Brown (Aleta)
